ME208 Marine Survey

This course is designed for the marine professional who wants to learn more about the appraisal side of the industry and the non-marine professional who wants basic knowledge of the industry. The course may be taken as a three-day seminar or, with an optional three hour exam on the fourth day, as an accredited course. Course/seminar includes a field trip to a shipyard to inspect a vessel under the guidance of two expert surveyors. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

About the instructors: Norman Laskay, ASA, NAMS-CMS, MRICS is a partner with the worldwide marine surveying firm Dufour, Laskay & Strouse, Inc. (DSL) and is based in Louisiana. Norm became a marine surveyor in 1974 after prior experience at sea and with steamship agency, bulk cargo handling and vessel operations. He is now Of Counsel. He has been involved with many aspects of marine surveying including hull, machinery and cargo, both inland and ocean.

Mr. Laskay has been active with the American Society of Appraisers’ International Machiney and Technical Specialties Committee. He has written a comprehensive exam for the Commercial Marine Appraisal specialty, the Marine Asset Appraisal chapter for the ASA/MTS text book, Second Edition, is on the Board of Examiners, and wrote this 30 hour course for the ASA on commersial and yacht asset appraisal.

Norm Laskay holds a B.S. from Maine Maritime Academy in Marine Transportation and has post graduate and continuing education in Law, Diesel Repair, Marine Survey and Appraisal.

Captain Joe Rodgers

Capt. Joseph Rodgers, ASA, NAMS: Since 1978 Captain Rodgers has been professionally involved as a marine surveyor for international and domestic insurance companies, financial institutions, yacht brokers, law firms, corporations, individuals and insurance companies. He and his firm, Rodgers and Associates of Santa Cruz, CA have surveyed vessels, both commercial and private, power and sail, of all sizes, types and construction. He was appointed by Geary Associates Marine Surveyors to the Underwriters at Lloyds of London providing surveys on cargo/ships/passenger ferries, charter fleets and private vessels. Captain Rodgers will lead the vessel survey field trip.

What will I take home? The course book, which includes sections on equipment identification, appraisal processes, and report preparation guidelines.

Is reaccreditation credit available? A uniform reaccreditation credit certificate will be awarded, verifying 24 hours of attendance if taken as a seminar, or a Certification of Completion for the course with successful completions of exam. (Please check preference of Course or Seminar.)
